KABUL, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and U.S. Foreign Secretary's Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad exchanged views on peace negotiations with the Taliban, the Presidential Palace said Wednesday.
After his arrival on late Tuesday, the U.S. envoy shared information about the recent developments made in the status of peace negotiations with the Taliban representatives in Qatar and Pakistan, the palace said in a statement reached Xinhua.
The two sides also spoke on how to declare a ceasefire and target the militants safe havens beyond Afghanistan border, said the palace.
Meanwhile, Ghani expressed his deep concern over the continuation of violence by the Taliban and said both the people and the government of Afghanistan are in favor of a lasting peace in the country.
Khalilzad, on Dec. 13, tweeted that he had taken a brief pause for the Taliban to consult their leadership about his demand for a reduction in violence, while Doha-based Taliban negotiators have been said to send recommendation to their leadership for taking a final decision on the envoy's ceasefire proposal.
