NAIROBI, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese pay television company StarTimes on Friday handed over a digital television project to Kenyan authorities after successful implementation.

The project that was launched in June 2018, and is part of the 10,000 digital villages project implemented by StarTimes across Africa, involved installation of satellite television services in public institutions and households in 47 Kenyan counties.

The project involves installing satellite television dishes, high definition set top box and other accessories in 800 villages across the country.

Kenya is among African countries where the 10,000 digital villages television project is being implemented by the ministry of ICT in conjunction with StarTimes.

So far, 16,000 individual households and 2,400 public institutions have benefited from the satellite digital television project in the country.

Wu Peng, the Chinese ambassador to Kenya, said the digital television project has enhanced Sino-Kenya cultural cooperation to realize mutual benefits.

"We believe implementation of the project will effectively promote cultural exchange between China and Kenya, greatly enrich the daily lives and improve the cultural knowledge of locals," said Wu.

Wang Xiaoqing, StarTimes Kenya chief executive officer, said implementation of the digital television project, that involved skills and technology transfer, has benefited local communities through enhanced connectivity.

"This project is a milestone towards growing access to information in our communities and StarTimes will support additional initiatives to ensure that more Kenyans can access, afford and enjoy the beauty of digital television,"said Wang.

He said that StarTimes will rally behind initiatives that enables Kenyan households to benefit from digital revolution in the broadcasting sector.
