NANJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- An airport in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing has handled more than 30 million passengers so far this year, becoming the 10th-busiest airport on the Chinese mainland, the airport's operator said Monday.

The annual passenger throughput of over 30 million brings Nanjing Lukou International Airport into the ranks of the world's busiest airports, said Zhu Wensong, vice president of Eastern Airport Group Co., Ltd., operator of the airport.

The airport's passenger throughput has maintained double-digit growth on average over the past four years. In 2019, the number of international passengers increased nearly 11 percent, Zhu said.

The airport, which was put into operation in 1997, has opened more than 270 domestic and overseas air routes linking over 150 cities around the world.

The airport is expected to increase its annual passenger capacity to 50 million in 2020 after its second terminal is put into operation and to 70 million in 2030 with its third terminal.
