GAZA/RAMALLAH, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Hamas movement on Wednesday called on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to issue a presidential decree for holding the general elections in the Palestinian territories soon.

Salah al-Bardaweel, a senior Gaza Hamas leader, told a news conference held in Gaza that President Abbas has to issue the decree and impose it on Israel to hold the election also in East Jerusalem.

"We agreed that there will be no elections without holding it in Jerusalem, and there is no single Palestinian will go to vote without Jerusalem," he said.

Al-Bardaweel stressed that "issuing the elections decree would impose Israel to accept holding it in Jerusalem," adding that "we should turn the question of holding the elections in Jerusalem as political clash with Israel."

The senior Hamas leader stressed that the Palestinians "will be able to push Israel to hold it in Jerusalem and defeat the decision of American President Donald Trump on Jerusalem."

In late 2017, Trump declared Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel and in May last year, he moved the embassy of his country from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which led to severing ties between the Palestinian Authority and the United States.

Al-Bardaweel called on the Arabs and Muslims all over the world to stand by the side of the Palestinian people to practice their rights of holding the elections in Jerusalem.
