4.9-magnitude earthquake hits eastern Turkish city

ANKARA, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake of 4.9 magnitude on Friday hit the eastern Turkish city of Elazig, the country's disaster and emergency body reported.

The quake occurred at 10:02 a.m. local time (0702 GMT) at a depth of 7 km, with its epicenter below the Sivrice district, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said on its website, according to semi official Anadolu Agency.

No loss of life has been reported and only one empty building was destroyed by the quake, accroding to Cetin Oktay Kaldirim, governor of Elazig.

The tremor was also felt in nearby provinces including Malatya, Adiyaman and Sanliurfa, and schools have been suspended for the day in Elazig.
