Myanmar records over 200 human trafficking in 2019

YANGON, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar logged a total of 239 human trafficking cases in its states and regions last year, said figures released by the Anti-Trafficking Police Force Friday.

During the whole 2019, 358 people including 297 females were victimized while 732 traffickers were charged in connection with the cases.

Regionally, Yangon region and Shan state registered topped with 65 cases each, followed by Mandalay and Ayeyarwady regions with 28 cases each and Kachin state with 25 cases, among others.

During the period, there were 40 domestic trafficking in persons in terms of forced labor, prostitution and forced marriage.

In 2018, 317 people including 25 children were victimized in connection with 206 human trafficking cases across the country.

Under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law, people who smuggle women and children are sentenced to at least 10 years or up to lifetime sentence or fine while money or property received through trafficking will be confiscated by the government.
