Profile: Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith will pay an official visit to China on Jan. 5-9 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

The following is a profile of Thongloun.

Thongloun was born in Houaphan province of Laos on Nov. 10, 1945. He became Lao deputy foreign minister in 1987, and later served as Lao minister of labor and social welfare, and chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the National Assembly.

In 2001, Thongloun became Lao deputy prime minister and chairman of the State Planning Committee. From 2006 to early 2016, he served as Lao deputy prime minister and foreign minister.

He was elected prime minister in April 2016.
