DAMASCUS, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- As many as 247 people have been killed across Syria from landmines, and buildings collapse over the past year, a war monitor reported on Saturday.
A total of 65 women and 68 children were among those killed in the explosive of landmines, which are largely left in formerly rebel-held areas in Syria, mainly in the provinces of Homs, Hama in central Syria and the eastern province of Deir al-Zour as well as areas in southern Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Landmines have killed dozens of people in the formerly rebel-held areas amid government-led efforts to remove the mines.
Awareness campaigns have taken place in some Syrian areas to warn civilians of the unknown projectiles found in some areas.
The Syrian army also sends text messages when it finds weapons stashes of the rebels or when it will detonate explosive devices left by the rebels in liberated areas.
