ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Seven people were killed in a car accident on Sunday in southern Ethiopia's Borena zone, Oromia regional state, local authorities said.

The accident happened after a bus carrying passengers traveling on the road overturned and crashed in the Dire district in the Borena zone on Sunday morning, state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reported quoting the Borena zone administration office.

The local administrative government office also noted that "various others" also sustained heavy and minor injuries from the incident.

The deadly accident came on the backdrop of another tragic car accident earlier this week that left 12 people dead after a truck collided head-on with a passenger minibus on Wednesday in Gidami district in western Wollega zone.

Last Sunday, another deadly incident had left 27 people dead after an overloaded minibus collided head-on with another bus in East Shewa Zone of Oromia regional state.

Despite having one of the lowest per capita car ownership in the world, deadly traffic accidents, blamed on bad roads, flawed driving license issuance system, and lax enforcement of road safety, are common in the east African country. Enditem
