NEW DELHI, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held phone conversations with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as well as foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman, respectively, on Sunday night, over the evolving situation in the Gulf amidst escalated tensions between Washington and Tehran.
"Had a telephonic discussion with Secretary of State @SecPompeo on the evolving situation in the Gulf region. Highlighted India's stakes and concerns," Jaishankar said in Twitter Sunday night.
In another tweet, the Indian minister said he also held a telephone conversation with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and exchanged views on recent developments in the region.
Jaishankar also had a phone talk with Oman's Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, reaffirming India's interest in the stability and security of the Gulf region.
Earlier, the Indian minister also spoke with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif over phone, saying New Delhi remained "concerned" about the levels of tension prevailing in the Gulf.
The two ministers agreed to "remain in touch" as the latest developments took a "serious turn".
Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated following the killing of Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani, head of Iran's elite Quds Force, by a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad International Airport on Jan. 3.
