SUVA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- It is now faster and simpler to apply for a business license in Fiji after officials rolled out a new process for business licensing effective from 2020.

The new licensing system was launched by the Ministry of Local Government and Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

According to a statement from the Department of Information on Wednesday, the new process is a modernized approach which is faster and simpler, allowing any type and size of business to apply for a license to operate.

Only three essential documents must be submitted with the application form, including a copy of Business Registration, Tax Identification Number and License Application Form.

A copy of Investment Fiji Certificate and Work Permit of the Investor will be required for foreign investors. Municipal Councils and District Offices will process business applications within a 48-hour time period.

The fees for each business license category are outlined in the Business License Schedule for Municipal Councils and District Officers.

All new businesses that are classified as low risk businesses must comply with all the legal and regulatory requirements within six months of obtaining the business registration or license. All new buildings for business purposes must comply with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and National Fire Authority (NFA) requirements.

Licenses will be issued for the high risk businesses, who cannot operate until all requirements are met.

The categorization of business operation risks is also available with the Councils and District Officers which will determine the level of fees payment required.
