German shares lose 0.65 pct at start of trading on Wednesday

BERLIN, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- German stocks were off to a shaky start on Wednesday, with the benchmark DAX index decreasing by 86.34 points, or 0.65 percent, opening at 13,140.49 points.

The biggest winner among Germany's 30 largest listed companies at the start of trading on Wednesday was high-tech polymer materials producer Covestro, increasing 0.25 percent, followed by consumer goods company Beiersdorf with 0.19 percent and energy company E.ON with 0.17 percent.

Shares of Lufthansa fell by 1.89 percent. Germany's largest airline was the biggest loser at the start of trading on Wednesday.

Following growing tensions between the United States and Iran, Lufthansa cancelled a flight from Frankfurt to the Iranian capital Tehran because of the current situation in the region, according to the German airline.

Price-adjusted new orders of the German manufacturing sector had decreased 1.3 percent in November 2019, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said on Wednesday.

Compared to 2018, seasonally and calendar adjusted orders from Germany in November had increased by 1.6 percent while international orders had fallen by 3.1 percent, according to Destatis.

The euro was trading almost unchanged at 1.1151 U.S. dollars, increasing slightly by 0.18 percent on Wednesday morning.
