KHARTOUM, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on Thursday visited the stronghold of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector in South Kordofan State.

Hamdok's visit to Kauda is the first by a government official since the breakout of war in South Kordofan in 2011, official SUNA news agency reported.

"Visiting Kauda constitutes a historical day," said Hamdok when addressing a popular gathering in Kauda.

"The top priority of the transitional government is to achieve peace in Sudan generally and for the people of the Nuba Mountains in particular," he said.

Hamdok said that the change which was achieved in Sudan meant to put an end to the suffering of the citizens caused by war.

The Kauda town is located some 90 km east of Kadogli, the capital city of South Kordofan State.

Since the fighting broke out between the government forces and the fighters of the SPLM/northern sector in 2011, Kauda has become the stronghold of the rebel movement.

Khartoum has participated in two rounds of talks with the Darfur rebel movements and the SPLM factions which are active in South Kordofan and Blue Nile areas. Enditem
