TAIPEI, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan had its first snowfall of 2020 Monday as a cold front swept through the island, the island's weather department said.

Hehuanshan Mountain in central Taiwan, with an altitude of 3,402 meters, experienced snowfall Monday morning while Yushan Mountain, the highest peak in Taiwan with an altitude of nearly 3,952 meters, received 13 minutes of ice pellets, the weather department said.

Several mountainous regions with an altitude above 3,000-meters have seen a series of snowfall as a majority of the island recorded temperatures as low as 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, it added.

The cold front is expected to weaken on Wednesday and Thursday.
