UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Monday adopted a resolution to extend, for six months, the mandate of the UN mission to support the Hodeidah Agreement between the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels.
Resolution 2505, which won the unanimous support of the 15 members of the council, extends the mandate of the UN mission in Yemen till July 15, 2020. Its current mandate expires on Jan. 15.
The UN Mission to support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA) will continue to lead and support the functioning of the UN-led Redeployment Coordination Committee to oversee a cease-fire in the governorate of Hodeidah, the redeployment of forces and mine action operations; to monitor the compliance of the parties to the cease-fire and the mutual redeployment of forces from the city of Hodeidah and the ports of Hodeidah, Salif and Ras Issa; to work with the parties so that the security of the city and ports is assured by local security forces in accordance with Yemeni law.
The resolution underlines the importance of close collaboration and coordination between all UN entities operating in Yemen in order to prevent duplication of effort and to maximize the leveraging of existing resources.
It requests the secretary-general to report to the council on a monthly basis on progress regarding the implementation of the resolution, and to present to the council a review of UNMHA at least one month before UNMHA's mandate is due to expire.
UNMHA was established by the Security Council in January 2019, after UN-brokered talks in Sweden in December 2018 resulted in the Hodeidah Agreement, which is part of a broader Stockholm Agreement.
