Wall Street climbs amid rallying Tesla shares

NEW YORK, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks climbed on Monday, bolstered by handsome gains in Tesla shares.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 83.28 points, or 0.29 percent, to close at 28,907.05. The S&P 500 increased 22.78 points, or 0.70 percent, to 3,288.13. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 95.07 points, or 1.04 percent, to 9,273.93.

Ten of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors closed higher, with materials and technology up 1.36 percent and 1.34 percent, respectively, leading the advancers. Health care fell 0.35 percent, the only declining group.

Shares of U.S. electric car maker Tesla surged 9.77 percent to 524.86 dollars per share at market closing after financial service firm Oppenheimer hiked its price target on the stock to 612 dollars per share from 385 dollars apiece.

Investors also awaited the kickoff of the corporate earnings season. S&P 500 earnings are expected to have declined by 2 percent in the fourth quarter, according to FactSet.

Meanwhile, traders continued to remain vigilant of possible geopolitical risks stemming from U.S.-Iran tensions. Enditem
