Five defence personnel among 10 killed in avalanches in Indian-controlled Kashmir

NEW DELHI, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- At least ten people, including five defence personnel, died in different incidents of avalanches in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Tuesday.

Confirming the defence personnel's deaths, an official in the Defense Ministry in New Delhi said that four soldiers belonging to the Indian Army and one belonging to the Border Security Force (BSF) died in two separate avalanches.

According to the official, four Indian Army men lost their lives after an avalanche hit their post in the Machil sector in Kupwara district of Indian-controlled Kashmir, the BSF soldier died in an avalanche along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir.

The LoC is a de facto border that divides Kashmir into India and Pakistan controlled parts.

Meanwhile, according to media reports, in a separate avalanche five civilians were killed after an avalanche hit the Kulan village in Sonmarag area of Ganderbal district.
