TALUQAN, Afghanistan, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Nine fighters including seven militants have been confirmed dead as fighting erupted in Baharak district of the northern Takhar province on Wednesday, provincial police spokesman Abdul Khalil Asir said.
The clash, according to the official flared up after a group of Taliban fighters targeted a security checkpoint in Baharak district early Wednesday morning and police returned fire killing seven insurgents and forcing the others to flee.
Two policemen were also killed in the firefight, the official added.
Taliban militants who are operational in parts of the relatively restive Takhar province with Taluqan as its capital 245 km north of Kabul haven't commented.
