UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Peacekeepers are patrolling the city of Alindao in southern Central African Republic (CAR) after clashes killed two members of the country's armed forces last week, a UN spokesman said on Wednesday.
The UN patrols are protecting civilians, including some 400 people displaced by violence who sought shelter at a UN base, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The clashes took place on Jan. 9 and involved the CAR armed forces and members of an armed group.
"The UN (peacekeeping) mission says that the situation is calm despite continuing tension," Dujarric said. "They are preparing to send a team to Alindao consisting of police, human rights, justice and prison officers to investigate the clashes."
Meanwhile, the spokesman said that all 13 bases of an "ex-self-defense" group in the PK5 neighborhood of the capital Bangui have been dismantled in efforts to secure that area, adding that peacekeepers are jointly patrolling there with CAR internal security forces.
The UN mission has launched an awareness campaign in PK5 neighborhood to explain its outreach program and work to protect civilians, Dujarric said.
In late December, about 40 people were killed in clashes between armed groups and business owners in a trading center in the PK5 area of Bangui.
