Lithuanian Zalgiris stuns Red Star 76-70 in basketball Euroleague

BELGRADE, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Lithuanian Zalgiris stopped the winning streak of the Serbian basketball champion Red Star in Belgrade Arena on Wednesday by 76-70 in the 19th round of the Euroleague in front of more than 15,000 home spectators.

At the start of the match the guest team gained the lead thanks to Arturas Milaknis who made three consecutive three-pointers. Although Red Star's Lorenzo Brown helped the home team to catch up, Zalgiris stayed in front at the end of the first quarter.

With both teams raising the level of their defenses in the second quarter, the Red Star managed to even the score at 38-38 at the halftime.

In the third quarter, the Red Star led 45-38 with a 7-0 run. However, Zach Leday quickly put Zalgiris back on track with a 11-0 run.

The guests entered the final quarter with 4-point advantage, and achieved a 5-0 run at its beginning, which secured their sixth win in the Euroleague.

Zalgiris' Lukas Lekavicius scored the game high of 17 points. Red Star's Lorenzo Brown scored the team high of 14.

Zalgiris, which is near the bottom of the Euroleague standings, ended the Red Star streak of four consecutive wins. The Red Star is ranked 8th with nine wins.

The Red Star will host German Alba on January 17, while Zalgiris travels to Athens to meet Panathinaikos.
