JERUSALEM, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Israel's military said on Wednesday night it had carried out retaliatory airstrikes at sites in the Gaza Strip belonging to Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian movement that runs the enclave.
A military spokesperson said in a statement that fighter jets struck "a number of Hamas terror targets" in the northern Gaza Strip.
The sites included a weapons manufacturing place and a military compound, said the spokesperson.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The strikes came after unidentified militants in Gaza fired four projectiles at southern Israel, causing no injuries or damage. Two of the rockets were intercepted by Iron Dome, Israel's anti-rocket system.
The military said it views the fire "with great severity" and warned it will operate "as necessary" against further rockets. It added that it holds Hamas "responsible for all events transpiring in Gaza and emanating from it, and will bear the consequences for its actions against Israeli civilians."
The cross-border violence came amidst international efforts, led by Egypt and the United Nations, to achieve a long-term ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
