DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian police said on Thursday they have arrested 27 Ethiopian illegal immigrants who were in transit to South Africa.

Wankyo Nyogesa, the Coast regional police commander, said they were arrested on January 14 and January 15 after they were found without valid permits to enter the country.

He said preliminary investigations showed that they entered the country through an Indian Ocean illegal port at Mlingotini using a dhow that they abandoned after their mission was completed.

"Their intention was to travel to South Africa," said the police officer, adding that police will hand over the illegal immigrants to immigration authorities for legal action.
