LUSAKA, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government has expressed optimism that the country will have a good agricultural harvest in the 2019/2020 farming season, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

Chief Government Spokesperson Dora Siliya said the country is expected to enjoy a good harvest because of the good rains being experienced and the timely distribution of inputs to farmers.

She said in a release that the government has so far delivered 100 percent farm inputs to all districts in the country under a subsidized government program of providing inputs to smallholder farmers.

According to her, the government has also distributed chemicals to combat fall army worms that were attacking maize fields in various parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the government spokesperson has called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to combat climate change.

"Experts have told us that the rate at which we are losing trees as a country is alarming. Government therefore appeals to every citizen to plant a tree wherever they are and the media have a critical role to play in sensitizing the communities in this regard," she said.
