LUSAKA, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Zambia have embarked on an exercise to assess the extent of damage caused by flashfloods that have been experienced in some part of the country, the country's disaster management agency said on Thursday.
The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) said a combined team of officials from the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Local Government and Ministry of Infrastructure has been instituted to assess the extent of the damage caused by flashfloods.
Rachael Chama, Communications Officer at the disaster agency said the assessment will help the government come up with appropriate response measures.
The government, she said, was committed to ensure that normalcy was quickly restored in the affected areas.
"It is unfortunate that the rains experienced have affected maize fields and destroyed the crops, which may affect the food security in the districts. The communities are urged to remain calm as the situation is being closely monitored to ensure lives are safeguard," she said in a release.
Flashfloods have been reported in different parts of Zambia due to heavy rains experienced.
The country's meteorological agency, the Zambia Meteorological Department, has warned of more flashfloods in some parts of the country due to anticipated increased rains this week.
