COLOMBO, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka on Thursday banned loud music and videos from being played on buses and warned of strict legal action against drivers who ignored the regulation, local media reported.

Sri Lanka's National Transport Commission (NTC), quoted by media reports as saying that CDs containing traditional, soft music had been distributed to all bus drivers and bus depots across the country, and only this music would be allowed to be played when carrying passengers.

"Many music videos played in buses are inappropriate for children. The new regulation will apply to both private and Sri Lanka Transport Board buses. The NTC has the right to take legal action against bus drivers and conductors based on public complaints," NTC Director-General Nilan Miranda told reporters.

The Transport Ministry said last week that there had been frequent complaints from long-suffering passengers over ear splitting music being played on buses, while many on social media had called for a complete ban.
