BERLIN, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Germany's Green party received the same level of political support as the governing Christian Democratic Union (CDU)/Christian Socialist Union (CSU), both with 29 percent, according to the Politbarometer survey published by German public broadcaster ZDF on Thursday.
Weighing the data to represent actual voting results, the survey found that the conservative union CDU/CSU of Chancellor Angela Merkel would get 27 percent of votes, followed by the Green party with 23 percent, according to the survey.
The SPD and AfD both reached 14 percent, the Left party 9 percent and the FDP 7 percent, the survey found. CDU/CSU and the Greens continued be the only party alliance with a majority in the Bundestag.
Regarding the political future of the Green party, most respondents believed that a course towards the center would be "particularly promising", according to Politbarometer. Only 10 percent believed that a political course more to the left would be more successful.
Although the Greens has profited from the increasing importance of climate change, the survey found that only 36 percent of all respondents believed the party would be capable of leading the next German government with a green chancellor.
About 61 percent of respondents were not confident about the Green party becoming the senior government partner. Skepticism in this regard was particularly pronounced among supporters of the AfD, FDP and CDU/CSU, according to Politbarometer.
