RIGA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Latvia's right-wing National Alliance has proposed allowing election campaign only in the state language, according to a statement released by the party on Monday.

The National Alliance faction in the Baltic country's parliament will call on coalition partners to consider amending the law on election campaigns to stipulate a mandatory use of Latvian in any campaign advertizing.

The National Alliance argues that the new regulation would widen the use of Latvian as a state language ahead of national elections, as well as municipal elections in Latvia.

The requirement to only use Latvian would apply to campaign adverts that are broadcast on public and commercial television channels and radio stations, campaign ads that are published in newspapers, magazines and on the internet, as well as ads that are placed in public premises and outdoor spaces.

Commenting on the proposal, National Alliance leader Raivis Dzintars called it a "matter of our national dignity". Enditem
