ROME, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Italian cinemas and cinephiles on Monday marked the centennial of the birth of the country's iconic film director Federico Fellini, according to media reports.

The reports said hundreds of cinemas across Italy held special screenings of films from Fellini's career that spanned nearly half a century. His famous movie "La Dolce Vita" is reportedly being shown Monday in more than 100 cities across Italy.

"Monday is the day we will all honor the legacy of Federico Fellini, one of the all-time giants of cinema," Italian Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini said in a statement.

Fellini was born in the Adriatic coastal town of Rimini on Jan. 20, 1920. He was nominated for a dozen Academy Awards for his work, and won four in the category of best foreign language film.
