LONDON, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Police in Liverpool said Monday they were left "flabbergasted" when called to an apartment in a residential area of Birkenhead following reports of a snake in the bathroom.

The occupant of the first floor flat called the Merseyside Police 1 a.m. on Dec. 30. When police arrived, they found themselves confronted by a boa constrictor almost two and a half meters in length.

"Neither the woman occupant of the flat, or her neighbor knew where the snake had come from," a police spokeswoman said in a statement.

The police officers called a number of organizations to help recover the reptile, but unfortunately they were unable to attend. Eventually they called fellow officer Chris Eastwood from the crime-busting Matrix team.

Eastwood has knowledge of snakes and was able to calmly approach the reptile, which had wrapped itself around the bathroom sinks and taps. After giving it some water, the officer was able to coax it to unravel itself so that he could put it into a large and safe container, said the spokesperson.

Police then made arrangements to have the snake temporarily housed at a local pet rescue facility.

The spokeswoman said that "the snake has been temporarily rehomed and is doing well."
