TOKYO, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks lost ground Tuesday morning, with investors opting to lock in gains, amid a lack of fresh trading cues as U.S. markets were closed a day earlier for a national holiday.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 180.91 points, or 0.75 percent, from Monday to 23,902.60.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 8.08 points, or 0.46 percent, at 1,736.08.

Air transportation, chemical and mining-oriented issues comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
