ZAGREB, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer on Thursday commended Croatia for properly protecting the border against illegal immigrants.

"I have no criticism that I could make about the work of the police in Croatia and other security services," Seehofer said at a joint press conference with his Croatian counterpart Davor Bozinovic after an informal meeting of European Union (EU) justice and interior ministers.

The German minister said a "strong state" is needed when it comes to protecting citizens and security, and announced German assistance to Croatia in protecting the border.

"The Croatian police guard the EU's longest land frontier, and Germany is one of those member states that understands and appreciates what the Croatian police is doing," Bozinovic said.

The fight against illegal migration was also one of the topics discussed at the Zagreb meeting by the ministers of justice and interior affairs, which concluded that Europe would face illegal migration for years to come.

Participants of the meeting also agreed to jointly fight against smuggling networks and terrorism. Enditem
