TRIPOLI, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed government spokesperson announced Saturday the repelling of an attack by the east-based army in the capital Tripoli.

"Our forces responded to an attack by the militias of Haftar (commander of east-based army) today after they attempted to violate the cease-fire again in southern Tripoli," Mohamed Gonono said in a statement.

"Our forces destroyed a number of armored vehicles of Haftar after accurately targeting a gathering of the militants (the east-based army) supported by mercenaries," the statement added.

The east-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, had been leading a military campaign since April 2019 in an attempt to take over Tripoli from the UN-backed government.

The armed conflict has killed and injured thousands of people, and displaced more than 150,000.

The two rival parties agreed to cease fire on Jan. 12, but both have been accusing each other of breaching the truce.
