WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Major League Soccer (MLS) team Inter Miami announced on Friday that they have acquired American player Wil Trapp from Columbus Crew.

"Wil is one of the most respected leaders in American soccer," Miami sporting director Paul McDonough said. "He has served as captain at both the club and international levels and fits the culture we are building here in South Florida. Wil is also a top-class midfielder with established success in MLS."

Trapp, who turned 27 this month, signed with the Crew ahead of the 2013 season and went on to make 185 appearances for his hometown club and become the team's captain.

The defensive midfielder has remained a key part of the Crew, but the club acquired Darlington Nagbe earlier this offseason, creating a log jam in midfield.

"First and foremost, we want to thank Wil for his seven years of contributions on and off the field while as a member of the first team of Crew SC," said Crew president Tim Bezbatchenko.

"This was certainly a difficult decision to make, but headed into the final year of Wil's contract, we were presented with an opportunity that we felt would mutually benefit both the club and the player."
