BRATISLAVA, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Both Banska Bystrica and Kosice won, gaining some ground on league leaders Slovan Bratislava in the 46th round of the Slovak Tipsport Liga on Friday.
Second-ranked Banska Bystrica beat Nitra 5-2 on the road, thanks to two goals from Samuel Mlynarovic.
After trailing 2-0, the home team, which was ranked ninth, tried to get back into the game but the visitors kept piling on powerplay goals and put the game away 5-2.
In a tight match between two neighbors, Poprad tried to deny Kosice its chance to cut the deficit to the top spot in the standings by scoring the go-ahead goal but the home team rallied in the second period by scoring two goals a minute apart and it proved to be enough to take a narrow 2-1 victory.
Zvolen took fifth place by hammering Trencin 6-1. The home team was surprisingly leading 5-0 going into the final period with goalie Tomas Tomek almost finishing the night with his third clean sheet of the season but Trencin's Czech forward Josef Mikyska robbed him of the honor.
Bruno Mraz led Zvolen's 6-1 victory with two goals, ending Trencin's four-game winning streak.
In Hungary's capital, the team from Budapest triumphed against Michalovce 3-1 to remain in tenth place, scoring a goal in each period.
The season's newcomer Michalovce leads the bottom half of the rankings but is only a point ahead of eighth Miskolc and ninth Nitra.
