RAMALLAH, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday met with Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy Alexander Lavrentiev over the latest developments in the light of the new U.S. Middle East peace plan.

Abbas urged Lavrentiev to work toward achieving the two-state solution on the basis of the 1967 border, official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

He briefed the Russian envoy on the latest developments on the ground after the announcement of U.S. President Donald's Trump's peace plan, better known as the Deal of the Century.

Lavrentiev highlighted Russia's position against the plan which is seen by Moscow as "unviable."

Abbas' meeting with the Russian envoy comes in the context of his diplomatic campaign to rally support against the U.S. plan.

Categorically rejecting Trump's plan, the Palestinian president has said he will launch an international diplomatic campaign to topple it and threatened to cut security ties with both the United States and Israel.
