BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Eighty-three percent of cluster outbreaks of the novel coronavirus infection occurred among family members, a Chinese expert said Tuesday.

Other cluster cases happened in public places where people tend to gather, including medical institutions, schools, shopping malls, factories and enterprises, said Wu Zunyou, an epidemiology expert at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention at a press conference.

When a family member is infected with the virus, secondary cases of infection may occur due to close contact between family members, he said.

He added that clustered epidemic outbreaks involved patients ranging from infants to the elderly.

To prevent infections, Wu suggested ventilating rooms, wearing masks, washing hands, and avoiding group activities.
