Sri Lanka nabs smuggled foreign cigarettes at airport

COLOMBO, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan airport officials on Friday seized over 450 cartons of foreign cigarettes from four suspects who were attempting to smuggle it into the island country, the police said.

The cigarettes were worth an estimated 22,000 U.S. dollars and was hidden in the luggage of the suspects who had landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport from United Arab Emirates's Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The suspects were questioned and later handed over to the police.

Sri Lanka last year launched a strong anti-drug campaign in the country aimed at ending the use of drugs by this year.
