Rio expects 1 bln reais in revenue from Carnival holiday

According to Fecomercio-RJ, Rio is consolidated as a cultural and entertainment destination for the Carnival period, with the local tourism agency Riotur estimating 7 million people will attend Carnival festivities all over the city.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Rio de Janeiro will receive 1 billion reais (232 million U.S. dollars) in revenue from the upcoming Carnival holiday, the Rio Trade Federation (Fecomercio-RJ) estimated on Monday.

According to Fecomercio-RJ, Rio is consolidated as a cultural and entertainment destination for the Carnival period, with the local tourism agency Riotur estimating 7 million people will attend Carnival festivities all over the city.

Average spending of those in Rio was estimated at 200 reais (46 U.S. dollars) per person over the five days of the long holiday, mostly on food and beverage, trips to nearby towns, transportation and costumes.

A total of 82.9 percent of Rio residents interviewed by a Fecomercio survey said they will remain in town for Carnival.
