ISTANBUL, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday said he will discuss the latest situation in Syria with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at 6:00 p.m. local time (1500 GMT) on the phone later in the day.

Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers in Istanbul, Erdogan said they would review all the developments in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib.

The Turkish leader also noted that during a joint phone call held earlier on Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel told him that they would like to have a quartet summit on March 5 in Istanbul.

"Regarding the proposal, Putin has not yet given the desired answer," Erdogan said, adding that he expects the Russian leader to reply in the upcoming phone call.

"The result of the evening phone conversation will determine our attitude," he stressed.

"In Idlib, I can say that a war is going on right now," Erdogan said.

Meanwhile, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar arrived in the Syrian border area near the Turkish province of Hatay earlier in the day to inspect the troops there.
