BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese insurers have donated 11.58 trillion yuan (about 1.65 trillion U.S. dollars) worth of insurance to frontline personnel fighting the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), an official said here Monday.

Ji Yuhua, deputy director of the policy research department of the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC), made the remarks at a press conference.

The CBIRC has strengthened the regulation of insurance donations to ensure the quality of the insurance services and timely settlement of the insurance claims, Ji said.

The current insurance claims of property insurance companies involving the novel coronavirus epidemic stood at 24.6 million yuan, while 6.57 million yuan of the total amount was for frontline medics.

Insurance companies have set up green channels to process the claims for COVID-19 patients, simplified the procedures of settlement and provided online settlement services, according to Ji.

More than 100 insurance companies have temporarily removed the limits on designated hospitals, deductibles and waiting periods at various levels to secure convenient services for patients.

Ji said, 70 life insurance companies have implemented extension on 1,210 products to cover COVID-19 without increasing their insurance premiums, benefiting policyholders.
