DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian Vice-President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Wednesday urged women to ensure that the 50/50 campaign was taken in their political parties' manifestos to enable them to equally contest for political posts with men.
Speaking at the launch of a Tanzania chapter for the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN), Hassan said Tanzanian women should enjoy a fair share of elective chances.
She said the launch of the chapter is a major milestone that will benefit all Tanzanian women and ensure their voice is better heard and their issues better addressed.
Hassan, the first Tanzanian woman to become the country's vice-president, said Tanzania has currently 126 women MPs out of 393 MPs, which is equivalent to 32 percent of lawmakers, adding that this figure has surpassed the Southern African Development Community's average women representation of 30 percent.
Hassan added that in Tanzania, women judges account for 30 percent in high courts, and in the country's cabinet, women make up 18 percent among all cabinet ministers.
The AWLN aims to advance, train and support female leaders in Africa. The network is pushing for policies that empower and enable women on the continent across the political, economic and humanitarian fields to reach their full potential.
