NEW DELHI, March 4 (Xinhua) -- A special police officer (SPO) and a civilian were killed, while as another SPO wounded Wednesday in a militant attack in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The attack was carried out at village Warpora in Sopore of Baramulla district, about 58 km northwest of Srinagar.

"This evening militants fired upon two SPOs in Warpora, killing one of them on spot and wounding another. A civilian who was standing close to them was also killed," a police official said. "The wounded SPO has been removed to the nearest hospital, wherefrom he was referred to Srinagar."

Following the attack contingents of police and army rushed to the spot. However, reports said militants managed to flee from the spot after the attack.

So far no militant outfit claimed responsibility of any such attacks.

Militant groups are engaged in a guerilla war with Indian troops in the region since 1989. The militants often carry out attacks on police and army in the region.

Gunfights between the two sides takes place intermittently.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
