ADEN, Yemen, March 5 (Xinhua) -- The Saudi-backed Yemeni government on Thursday announced raising combat readiness following a military expansion of the Houthi rebels in the country's northeast.

According to a statement released by the defense ministry website, several high-ranking military commanders of the government forces met and discussed latest military developments in Yemen.

Raising combat readiness of the Yemeni government forces came just days after the Houthis took over the strategic northeastern province of al-Jawf, bordering Saudi Arabia, read the statement.

Saudi Arabia has been leading an Arab military coalition to support the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi against the Iran-allied Houthi rebels since early 2015.
