BUENOS AIRES, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Carlos Tevez struck a dramatic late goal as Boca Juniors beat Gimnasia La Plata 1-0 to secure their 34th Argentinian first division title on Saturday.
The former Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus forward broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute with a dipping 25-yard strike at Boca's La Bombonera.
The goal was enough to see Boca overtake rivals River Plate at the top of the Argentinian Superliga table on the last weekend of the season after the latter could only manage a 1-1 draw at Atletico Tucuman.
"This is something that you can't explain. It's one of the happiest moments I've had in football," 36-year-old Tevez told reporters after the match. "We knew we had to fight until the end to have a chance and that's exactly what we did. This group was able to handle the pressure."
It was also an emotional night for Gimnasia head coach and Boca legend Diego Maradona. Before the game, the 1986 World Cup winner was presented with a framed Boca shirt emblazoned with his name and the No. 10 he wore in two separate spells for the club in the 1980s and 1990s.
The 59-year-old then held back tears while walking a slow lap of the Bombonera as the home side's fans sang to their former idol and cheered his name.
