ADEN, Yemen, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Pro-government Yemeni forces on Monday announced detonating around 9 tonnes of landmines and explosives dismantled from several areas in the country's Red Sea port city of Hodeidah.

According to a press statement of the pro-government forces, "the explosives experts detonated around 9 tonnes of Houthi-laid landmines, including marine mines, after completing the dismantling campaign conducted in key areas of Hodeidah."

The statement said that the destroyed landmines was removed from tourist resorts, beaches, fish landing centers, citizens' farms and public roads in Hodeidah.

On Sunday, an explosion caused by a landmine struck a motorcycle in Hodeidah, killing two people.

Fighters of the Houthi group had previously planted thousands of landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) before their withdrawal from different areas located along the country's western coast, according to Yemeni government officials.

The landmines and IEDs continue to pose a threat to people despite the ongoing efforts exerted by the experts of the mine-clearing projects in Yemen.

Previous reports by humanitarian organizations said that Yemen has become one of the largest landmine battlefields in the world since World War II.
