ADEN, Yemen, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Armed clashes renewed on Wednesday between the Yemen's government forces and the Houthi rebels in the country's Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, a military official told Xinhua.

According to the military source who asked to remain anonymous, "the fighting erupted after the Houthis launched an attack and attempted to infiltrate into military sites controlled by the joint pro-government forces in Kilo16 area east of Hodeidah."

He said that forces the first Giants Brigade managed to repulse the Houthi attack, leaving an unknown number of killed and injured fighters among the rebels.

Elsewhere in Hodeidah, the media center of the pro-government forces accused the Iranian-backed Houthis of firing around 13 artillery shells against the villages and farms in Durayhmi district.

The Houthis-affiliated Masirah television network also reported that Yemen's pro-government forces committed 248 cease-fire violations during the past 24 hours including flying seven spying drones over areas in Hodeidah.

The strategic city of Hodeidah has seen a shaky cease-fire between the Yemeni warring parties since both sides reached a UN-sponsored cease-fire agreement in Stockholm in December 2018.

The agreement was seen as the first phase to end Yemen's nearly five years of civil war.

The civil war has pushed over 20 million people to the verge of starvation.
