Kenya lauds African body's move to postpone Continental Club tournament

NAIROBI, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) has deemed the decision to cancel the continental club championships as a logical measure and necessary step which deserves support.

Waithaka Kioni, the president of the KVF, said curbing the spread of coronavirus was the most important aspect of every sports federation and it was not prudent to expose the players to the catastrophic pandemic.

"We support the Confederation of Africa Volleyball (CAVB) to cancel or postpone any sports event of international nature so as not to spread the coronavirus. However, we want the coaches to continue preparing the team so that when this pandemic is overcome, we can resume the normal sports calendar," Kioni said on Monday.

CAVB said in its statement that due to the ongoing global coronavirus outbreak, the Egypt Volleyball Federation, the organizer of both the Women's and Men's 2020 African Volleyball Club Championship, have agreed to postpone the two events which were scheduled to be played in Cairo from March 31 to April 23.

Emr Elwani, the CAVB President, said that the agreement to postpone the championships was reached at in the best interest of all parties considering that the health of the athletes, officials and fans is to be given top priority by all sporting authorities.
