RIO DE JANEIRO, March 17 (Xinhua) -- South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) president Alejandro Dominguez said Tuesday that the Copa Libertadores could resume in early May.

South America's premier club competition was suspended indefinitely last week as a precaution against the spread of the coronavirus.

CONMEBOL has tentatively earmarked May 6 for the competition's resumption but will await the recommendations of authorities before making a final decision, Dominguez said.

"We will continue to evaluate the situation. In an ideal scenario, it will be under control in May," he said. "We see the possibility of restarting the Libertadores on May 6."

The Copa Libertadores is South America's equivalent of the European Champions League and involves the top clubs from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.
