Live COVID-19 updates: Global COVID-19 cases top 1.2 mln, more districts in Wuhan classified as low-risk area

BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The world is now in a battle against COVID-19, a disease caused by a previously unknown coronavirus that has spread to over 200 countries and regions.

The following are the updates on the contagious disease.

WASHINGTON -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide has topped 1.2 million, according to a new tally from Johns Hopkins University on Saturday.

TOKYO -- Japan's health ministry and local governments said Sunday the number of COVID-19 infections nationwide had risen to 3,506 cases as of 10:30 a.m. local time here, an increase of 367 cases from a day earlier.

The death toll in Japan from the pneumonia-causing virus currently stands at a total of 96 people, according to the health ministry, with the figure including those from the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Yokohama, close to Tokyo.

WUHAN -- One more district in Wuhan, the hardest-hit city by novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, has been classified as a low-risk area of the virus outbreak, according to the provincial COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control headquarters Saturday.

This brought the number of low-risk districts in Wuhan to nine, out of its total 13 districts, as of Friday. Four other districts are classified as medium-risk areas, according to the headquarters.

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Sunday it received reports of 30 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Saturday, of which 25 were imported.

The five new domestic cases were reported in Guangdong Province, the National Health Commission said.

Also on Saturday, three deaths, all in Hubei Province, and 11 new suspected cases, all imported ones, were reported on the mainland. According to the commission, 213 people were discharged from hospitals after recovery, while the number of severe cases decreased by 36 to 295.

BRUSSELS -- Spain's confirmed coronavirus case tally reached 124,736 on Saturday, surpassing Italy's 124,632, according to the latest figures from the two countries.

The tally placed Spain first in Europe and second only to the United States worldwide in terms of confirmed cases.

According to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, the United States has confirmed more than 300,000 infections by Saturday afternoon.

ROME -- The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed over 15,000 lives in locked-down Italy, as the total number of infections, fatalities and recoveries has risen to 124,632, according to the fresh data released by the country's Civil Protection Department on Saturday.

Speaking during a televised press conference, Civil Protection Department Chief Angelo Borrelli confirmed that there were 2,886 new active coronavirus infections compared to Friday, bringing the nationwide total to 88,274 cases.

SAN FRANCISCO -- American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) has called on government and the public to take action in providing sufficient personal protective equipment.

Without immediate action, limited supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilators and other lifesaving equipment will cause greater loss of life and increase the toll from COVID-19, the association has warned.

QUITO -- The Ecuadoran Ministry of Public Health on Saturday raised the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus to 3,465, with 172 deaths.

Vice Minister of Health Ernesto Carrasco stated that in the last 24 hours, 97 new cases and 27 new deaths were reported.
