SANTIAGO, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Chile's Health Ministry on Sunday said 4,471 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, and 34 have died from the disease.

While 310 new cases were detected, the figures "show a constant downward trend" in the rate of infection, Health Minister Jaime Manalich said.

In the past 24 hours, seven patients died, bringing the death toll to 34.

Of the confirmed cases, 252 have been put on a respirator and 36 are in critical condition.

The latest results led the government to extend a total quarantine in 14 cities around the country, and cordon off areas with a rising number of cases with the help of the police and military personnel.

It also lifted the full quarantine in two locations, Puerto Williams and Rapa Nui, though special measures were to be put in place at area airports and ports of entry.

A curfew is in place nationwide, from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m., among other measures.
